Water that has a very high concentration of minerals like calcium and magnesium we call it hard water.

Around 85% of households in the USA have hard water says research done by U.S. Geological Survey including homes that use well or city water.

Even if a city has a treatment plant, pure water is very hard to find. These treatment plants can remove bacterias that are harmful and make water safe to drink but they will not improve the taste of the water you're drinking. In some places, water contains extra minerals like calcium and magnesium, and to remove those minerals you need a water softener.

Water softeners use a process called ion exchange and that removes the hardness materials and makes water soft. That process of exchange begins when hard water enters the water softening system. Hardness ions, calcium, and magnesium are exchanged into sodium ions and that turns hard water into the soft water that you can use in your home.

Hard water will not cause any serious health problems but it will contribute to dry hair and skin. Your skin serves as a barrier against harmful infections and bacteria and minerals that hard water will change the pH balance of your skin and make it weaker.

Hard water will impact your clothes too. It will strip away the color away from your clothes faster compared to treated water. The mineral residue from ward water will stain your sinks and bathtubs.

With hard water, you will have frequent plumbing repairs because steel pipes don't handle hard water very well. Those pipes will easily get damaged because of the buildup of minerals and your water flow will be impacted. Hard water can also cause other pipe problems and corrosion.

When calcium and magnesium build up in your pipes, your plumbing system will have to work much harder so the water can flow through and this will cause many problems including leaks and cracked pipes. Some of the smallest leaks will lead to gallons of water loos over some times and that will contribute to higher water bills.
